Frequently Asked Questions

Space Heating/Air Conditioning

NEW:  Primary space conditioning source -- in addition to passive solar heating -- is a heat pump/AC unit (recessed in the wall above the sideboard). It can only be activated with a remote (all-white, in a holder/pocket on the bookshelf near the TV).  Confirm that is at the desired setting* (Heating or Cooling "Mode" and desired temperature) and then press the yellow power button.

While this unit may well be all you ever need -- especially if you leave the doors to the other rooms open, we have electric baseboard heaters in the MBR and front bedroom. They work on individual room thermostats, keeping the individual room temperatures as dialed.  It is natural for baseboard heaters to make some "noises" which are audible during the extreme silent nights you experience in a place like Casa Pacis, far away from any other man-made sounds.***

Please conserve electric energy by turning heaters down or off, rather than opening windows, when it gets too warm, and when you leave the house.

*You should find the programming set for "Heat," 70 degrees, and a medium fan speed.  Just point the remote toward the wall-mounted unit and press the yellow power button.  The temperature indicator will then come on at the top right of the unit.  Heating (or cooling) will start after a few seconds.  Adjust the temperature setting up or down to your liking, but have it set at 70 when you depart.  There is no need to ever use any of the other buttons of the remote.

** These noises are usually a 60-Hz hum of the heating element and/or some thermal expansion/contraction "cracking."

*** There is an additional built-in fan-coil heater high up in the wall in the front bedroom, and another one behind the TV in the LR. They are noisy and inefficient and -- considering the new heat pump unit -- actually entirely superfluous; we recommend to just leave them off.  Repeat renters will remember the main space heater of the LR being a fan-coil unit in the far left of the room, close to the fireplace; that unit has been disconnected.
